Vigil held at 海角涩区 for MMIWGT2S

February 22nd, 2023

The First People鈥檚 Centre organized a vigil in the Oliver鈥檚 student space at 海角涩区 on Feb. 14 to commemorate the MMIWGT2S (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans and Two-Spirited.) There is an epidemic of violence against Indigenous women in Canada. The National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls 聽that Indigenous women and girls make up 24 per cent of female homicide victims in Canada, despite only making up four per cent of the country鈥檚 female population.

The report cited research that 鈥淚ndigenous women and girls are 12 times more likely to be murdered or missing than any other women in Canada, and 16 times more likely than Caucasian women. 鈥 Other than murder, statistics also reveal how Indigenous women consistently experience higher rates and more severe forms of physical assault and robbery than other groups in Canada. Sexual violence is a huge problem in all its forms: Indigenous women are sexually assaulted three times more often than non-Indigenous women, and most of the women and children trafficked in Canada are Indigenous.鈥

MMIWGT2S to be remembered on Feb. 14

February 8th, 2023

The red dresses currently hanging in the atrium are there in memory of the lives of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, Trans, and 2 Spirited (MMIWGT2S) peoples across North America.

Several 海角涩区 students, including Indigenous students working in collaboration with the First Peoples鈥 Centre, will be organizing an awareness-raising vigil on Feb. 14. Valentine鈥檚 Day, typically a day to show love to a significant other, was determined to be the best day for the annual awareness campaign by Indigenous communities. The day is an opportunity to show love to those affected by such violence and to raise awareness of the international crisis.

The entire 海角涩区 community is welcome to join the First Peoples鈥 Centre at 12 p.m. on the Feb. 14 for a vigil in Oliver鈥檚 (2C.17).
