Outstanding 海角涩区 individuals honoured with Forces Avenir awards

Three members of the 海角涩区 community were honoured with Forces Avenir awards on May 4: students Kitenge Kayembe and Fred-Dgennie Louis were recognized, respectively, for commitment and perseverance. Physics faculty member Joel Trudeau was honoured for his commitment to students.

A student community built on sustainability is definitely a Forces Avenir

The student-run 海角涩区 Sustainability Community is committed to supporting 海角涩区鈥檚 award-winning, globally recognized commitment to sustainability.

Led by Environmental Science students Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon, the students have worked on a variety of projects that support 海角涩区鈥檚 goal of promoting sustainability through reconnecting people, communities, and Nature.

On May 4, Narcisse and Kaligua received a Forces Avenir award in the Environment category for their 海角涩区 Sustainability Community project.

Mahsa Amini鈥檚 legacy is alive at 海角涩区

In September 2022, Mahsa Amini was arrested in Iran for not wearing a hijab correctly. Eyewitnesses say she was severely beaten. Hours later, she died at the age of 22. Mahsa had just been admitted to university and intended to pursue law. Her death sparked protests in Iran and around the world.

At 海角涩区, the Mahsa Amini Initiative was created by students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda. Their work was recognized on May 4 with the Forces Avenir Award in the category of Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice. Their project has also advanced for consideration at the provincial level.

Professional Photography students staff grad portrait pop-up studio

The 海角涩区 Professional Photography students partnered again this year with Campus Life and Leadership (CLL) and members of the 海角涩区 Web Group to offer graduation portraits to over 600 of 2023 海角涩区 grads. The collaboration is an excellent example of communities working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals.

Meet 海角涩区鈥檚 2023 Forces AVENIR cohort

Every year, 海角涩区 has had extraordinary students, teachers and staff who enrich our community with their projects, perseverance and passion.

This year, 海角涩区 is recognizing individuals: student Kitenge Kayembe and faculty member Joel Trudeau for their commitment; and student Fred-Dgennie Louis for her perseverance. 海角涩区 is also recognizing students for their great projects: Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon for the 海角涩区 Sustainability Project in the Environment category; and students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda for The Mahsa Amini Initiative in the Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice category.

The local ceremony will be Thursday, May 4 at 海角涩区. Both projects are moving forward for consideration at the provincial level of Forces AVENIR. Check the next D News on May 17 for a feature on our 2023 laureates.


Students learn leadership skills and make lasting friendships at Model UN

About 60 students were able to participate in the 海角涩区 Model United Nations (DCMUN) para-academic activity this year thanks in part to funding from the Student Academic Enrichment Fund of the 海角涩区 Foundation.

Model UN has a long history at 海角涩区, with the activity running on and off since the late 1990s. The current iteration of DCMUN was established in the 2010-2011 academic year and has been running ever since.

Rocking out at 海角涩区 VIB event March 29

A lively event stopped by 海角涩区 on March 29 to move and inspire students and staff. The VIB event is touring campuses across Quebec to promote well-being and health. The event featured a Pound also known as 鈥渞ocking out鈥 workout, pictured; photo courtesy of RSEQ.

One of College Nurse Julie Gosselin鈥檚 student health ambassadors reported: 鈥淭he participants really enjoyed the event and they liked their free merch. People seemed to really enjoy the Pound session as well since most of them had never done it before

鈥淚 think the event was really cool! It was a great way to promote physical activity during a time period when students are stressed and tend to forget the little things we should do to stay healthy.鈥


VIB Tour stops at 海角涩区 March 29

March 22nd, 2023

A fun and free event promoting well-being for all and physical fitness is coming to 海角涩区 Wednesday, March 29 from 11:45 a.m. to 1:50 p.m. in 3C.1.

Students are invited to for . The program includes Pound (鈥渞ocking out鈥) fitness sessions, glow-in-the-dark yoga, free snacks and fun. If there is space, staff are also welcome to attend.

鈥淭he VIB tour only makes a few campus stops every year so I think 海角涩区 students are lucky to have this opportunity,鈥 said Julie Gosselin of Student Health Services, 海角涩区鈥檚 VIB coordinator. The event is sponsored by the RSEQ, Sports Experts and the Quebec Government.


An evening with Oliver Jones at 海角涩区 March 10

Honouring legendary Montrealer and musician Oliver Jones and inspiring students are the objectives of a special evening being organized by members of 海角涩区鈥檚 Legacy Club with support from 海角涩区 staff, including the Campus Life and Leadership team, Community, Recreation and Leadership Training, Continuing Education and Community Services and the Communications Office.

鈥淥liver grew up in the Little Burgundy neighbourhood, home to the historic Union United Church, which is very close to the former Selby Campus of 海角涩区," said Simeon Pompey of the organizing committee. "Through his work/fame, he has influenced a lot of young Black people in Little Burgundy and Montreal to pursue higher education. It is very fitting that the College has endorsed the initiative to honour him.

鈥淒irectly and indirectly, young people鈥檚 lives were positively impacted. Through his charity work, Dr. Jones supported initiatives to help youth pursue post-secondary education.鈥

The evening will include performances, tributes and opportunities for students to ask Dr. Jones questions. There will be guests from community organizations but the VIPs will be Black 海角涩区 students and students who are personally invited.
