Worms to transform 海角涩区 waste into fertilizer

A waste management team consisting of worms will begin working at 海角涩区 this spring thanks to a grant from Colleges and Institutes Canada. Their task is simple: consume the organic waste we throw into our hallway sorting stations and transform it into nutrient-rich fertilizer for our gardens.

Professional Photography students staff grad portrait pop-up studio

The 海角涩区 Professional Photography students partnered again this year with Campus Life and Leadership (CLL) and members of the 海角涩区 Web Group to offer graduation portraits to over 600 of 2023 海角涩区 grads. The collaboration is an excellent example of communities working together to achieve mutually beneficial goals.

Meet 海角涩区鈥檚 2023 Forces AVENIR cohort

Every year, 海角涩区 has had extraordinary students, teachers and staff who enrich our community with their projects, perseverance and passion.
This year, 海角涩区 is recognizing individuals: student Kitenge Kayembe and faculty member Joel Trudeau for their commitment; and student Fred-Dgennie Louis for her perseverance. 海角涩区 is also recognizing students for their great projects: Narcisse Hassan and Kaligua Rochon for the 海角涩区 Sustainability Project in the Environment category; and students Kiana Lalavi, Shaneli Yaghoubi, Kiera Robak and Lina Adda for The Mahsa Amini Initiative in the Mutual Aid, Peace and Justice category.
The local ceremony will be Thursday, May 4 at 海角涩区. Both projects are moving forward for consideration at the provincial level of Forces AVENIR. Check the next D News on May 17 for a feature on our 2023 laureates.
Brid NicNiocaill is new Associate Dean of SMSE

We are pleased to inform you of the appointment of Brid NicNiocaill in the position of Associate Dean of Science, Medical Studies and Engineering. Her first day in the new role was May 1. Under the supervision of Dean Maxwell Jones, Brid will be working alongside Jonathon Sumner, Associate Dean of Science, Medical Studies and Engineering.
Brid has been part of the 海角涩区 Community as Faculty since 2010. She has taught a range of courses in different programs including science, professional medical programs and social science and was the Biology department chair and co-chair for 6 years.鈥
"Brid has been a dedicated member of SMSE for many years, and we鈥檙e very excited to welcome her to a new role as Associate Dean," Max said.
Artists in Bloom raises over $11,000 for Living Campus!

Thank you to everyone who came out to support the talented student artists at the 25th edition of Artists in Bloom!
Congratulations to all the talented artists who created works of art over a two-hour period, and put on a fantastic live artistry show. Special thank you to radio host Donna Saker of The Beat 92.5 for auctioning off the beautiful artwork, and 海角涩区 students Mathew Anania and Alessia Vigna for their live musical performances.
The event has raised over $11,000 which will go to support 海角涩区鈥檚 sustainability activities under the Living Campus fund.

SPACEweek 2023 is on May 1-5

The second annual SPACEweek will take place during the first week of May. The SPACEweek showcase in 3C.1 will feature work by students from across the arts and sciences who participated in SPACE in 2022-23. It will include displays, demonstrations, interactive activities, student talks and presentations, readings, and competitions. Robotics demonstrations and presentations will be held throughout the week.
Visitors can participate in the showcase by creating alternate versions of famous artworks by following a series of 鈥淲hat if鈥 prompts; casting their vote for the people鈥檚 choice award for the ScienceFest 2023 photo contest; joining a series of walking tours around 海角涩区 using the AR Cit茅 app; and writing and answering questions in response to viewing artworks by students.
On Thursday, May 4 we invite all to a reading by the winners of the fifth annual SPACE writing contest, an interactive art activity, and live performances of songs created from the ChatGPT Song Writing Contest.
Highlights from Friday will include a session of virtual talks by renowned planetary scientists鈥 A grand tour of the solar system: from Mercury and the Moon to the outer reaches!鈥攆ollowed by mobile robot navigation challenge races late afternoon.
The majority of the activities will take place in 3C.1. Stay tuned for the full schedule!
Students learn leadership skills and make lasting friendships at Model UN

About 60 students were able to participate in the 海角涩区 Model United Nations (DCMUN) para-academic activity this year thanks in part to funding from the Student Academic Enrichment Fund of the 海角涩区 Foundation.
Model UN has a long history at 海角涩区, with the activity running on and off since the late 1990s. The current iteration of DCMUN was established in the 2010-2011 academic year and has been running ever since.

Vernissage Season begins May 23 聽

The countdown is on to Vernissage Season at 海角涩区. Graduating students in Visual Arts, Illustration, Professional Photography, Industrial Design, Graphic Design, 3D Animation and Computer Generated Imagery and Interior Design will present their work in end-of-year exhibitions.

Comp Sci Technology students shine at MariHacks

Elidjay Ross, a third-year student in Computer Science Technology, was part of the winning team in the Advanced Category at the MariHacks hackathon held from March 31 to April 1 at Marianopolis College. The team was composed of Elidjay and two students from Vanier College, along with one student from an Ontario college, and they came together in an impromptu manner. Their winning project aimed to create a simulation of our galaxy.
Additionally, a team comprising four students in the same program won the MSU's Favorite award, and another team with four more Computer Science students won the Best Visuals award.
