海角涩区 Blues celebrate a successful season at Awards Night

May 3rd, 2023

On April 21 at Le Nouvel Hotel in the Dorchester Room, our 17 teams brought their year to an end by celebrating all the success enjoyed during the 2022-23 season.

Organized by Gavin Sealy, Maha Haddad and Kayla Smith of the Athletics Department, the Awards Night featured two awards for each team selected by the coaches (typically MVP and Rookie of the Year). Additionally, there were a few awards handed out in which the winners were selected by the Athletics Department. These included Male and Female Athlete of the Year and Male and Female Academic Athlete of the Year.

The evening was attended by over 300 student-athletes and featured Master of Ceremony Geoff Kloos, Interim Director of Student Services, along with speeches by Sebastien Rivest, Manager, Athletics and Caroline Blouin, Coordinator, Student Services. Caroline also handed out the Academic Achievement Awards to the student-athletes who had maintained over 85 per cent and 90 per cent overall averages.

A special moment was a video featuring highlights of the six teams which did exceptionally well this season鈥擠ivision 1 Men鈥檚 and Women鈥檚 Basketball, Division 2 Women鈥檚 Volleyball, Division 2 Men鈥檚 and Women鈥檚 Basketball, and Division 2 Women鈥檚 Soccer. Afterwards, the Blues then continued the celebration at Musique.

"It was an evening filled with great energy and positivity," says co-organizer Maha Haddad. "It was nice to see the athletes supporting all teams, not just their own. Was a great evening and the perfect way to end the season for the Blues. It is a sign of the good things to come for our Athletics program as we all felt like one unit."

About 1,000 meals served up by 海角涩区 Dining

May 3rd, 2023

The Peace Centre and the 海角涩区 Student Union (DSU) ran 海角涩区 Dining for the full two weeks of Earth Week, from April 17-28.

Each day in Conrod's, about 100 students and staff dropped off their reusable containers so they could be filled with a satisfying and hot vegan lunch, prepared by student and employee volunteers who were supervised by chef Jamal Spence. Meals varied from pelau, a Trinidadian staple, to banana pancakes, cinnamon rice Pudding & homemade warm berry jam. Over the two weeks, diners were provided with pamphlets, prepared by the Environment and Sustainability Certificate, highlighting the connection between food security, climate change, and sustainability.

Students and employees who participated in the program generously thanked the volunteers and chef Jamal Spence, noting how delicious the meals were and the wonderful sense of community building resulting from the initiative. Many community members, students and employees, expressed their desire to see 海角涩区 Dining all week throughout the academic year.

Diana Rice of the Peace Centre reported that for $800 in food, about 500 people ($1.60 per person) were fed during the second week of the initiative. An estimated 1,000 meals were served over the two weeks. Rice hopes to bring back 海角涩区 Dining with the DSU for a similar run next fall during Peace Week 2023, an established tradition of Peace Week for several years.
